A bulb auger chucks into a cordless drill and cuts a clean cylindrical plug in seconds. Gardeners use them for planting; detectorists use them for coin-depth targets in soft or sandy ground, where they leave a tidier hole than a trowel and cut recovery time down substantially. It is not the answer for rocky or root-bound sites, and you will want the drill you are not precious about, but on the right ground it is noticeably faster than digging by hand.
